Chapter Fifteen

Chloe

I was sleeping in my bed in Noctus’s office, having been carried there again after dinner—more roasted chicken.

As tasty as the roasted chicken is, I’m starting to get sick of it.

I rolled around, hanging one of my paws off the side of my bed so it dangled over the edge of Noctus’s desk—where my bed had been relocated to, despite there being a general lack of workspace.

It’d been a week since I’d run from the Book Nookery and was forced to accept my new life as pet to the King of the Mors Elves.

I’d finally caught up on sleep, but my sleeping patterns were weirder than usual, mostly because whenever Noctus slept he carried me off to his bedroom, but I wasn’t going to sleep when he slept. That would have been so foolish it would serve me right if I got killed in my sleep. So those nights I spent sitting in one of his bathroom sinks to doze, and thanked my lucky stars that he only seemed to need sleep every two to three days, and rarely slept for more than five hours.

Noctus petted my side, and I purred as was expected.

There was something very soothing about being petted. I closed my eyes and set my chin on the edge of the bed, but when I felt him try to pet my belly I batted at him with my claws, growling deep in my chest.

Aristide popped out his earbuds—it turned out he was a podcast junkie, and this week was binge listening to true crime podcasts. “Still trying to pet her stomach?”

Noctus turned his frown from me to Aristide. “You recognized her growl?”

“She only makes that sound when you press her personal boundaries and try to pet her stomach,” Aristide said. “Which I quite applaud her for. Keep your personal boundaries against him, Ama. Someone needs to!”

“I don’t understand.” Noctus seemingly ignored his friend as he scratched under my chin and I purred again. “She’s perfectly happy in all other areas. I’m an elf, she trusts me. She should be willing to trust me to touch her stomach.”

Not that area. Not ever! It’s too weird, even for the sake of keeping my cover.

I casually licked a paw and scrubbed at my face.

Aristide set his earbuds on an end table next to his embroidered chair. “Even though you’re an elf, I don’t expect your natural magic would be able to overwhelm an animal’s nature so entirely that they’d go against their personality. She’s a cat. They’re finicky by nature.”

I don’t believe that you’re old, Aristide. You’re too modern and smart! I hopped out of my bed and ambled over to the nearest bookshelf, studying the books.

I had yet to find anything helpful—or written in English—but I was going to keep looking.

I suspected the magic books were on that top shelf that lined the ceiling of the room, but whenever I went more than four shelves high on a bookshelf, Noctus pulled me down. Not out of concern for his books—like any proper book lover would be—no, no.
